If you read 10 Things I Miss About My Harley, you know that at 22 years old I was on top of the world. My father had been off of chemotherapy for almost year and life was grand. After endless months of research and shopping around I carefully selected a Harley-Davidson motorcycle to celebrate all that was good in life.

As it turned out, I sold that bike less than a year later. There's a pair of gloves full of reasons why. Here are 10 things I won't miss about it.

Miss You

A irritable old biker once told me that youth is wasted on the young. 22 years old is an exciting time in a man's life. He is full of vigor, prowess, and insatiable appetites. He is old enough to be witty and young enough to remember the end of his jokes. Likewise, he's often old enough to know better, and young enough not to care. The 22 year old male feels on top of the world.

It was at 22 years old I bought my first Harley-Davidson motorcycle. For a moment as brief as twilight, I was on top of the world. I miss that bike.

My father hasn't been permitted to drive for the past few years on account of having had brain cancer, leaving him prone to potential seizures. He beat his brain tumor only to be hit with cancer in the central nervous system in his spine. This isn't a sad story. Au contraire, it's my answer to not only what was my greatest motorcycle memory of 2011, but also a day I will remember forever.

After what seems like an endless unslaught of budget cuts to public services from Mayor Rob Ford's City Hall that has left Toronto hearts crying, will motorcyclists be the next victims or will Toronto Councillors remember that it was actually costing them to charge parking for motorcycles in the first place?

The wire was believed to be either fishing line or kite string. The man was rushed to St. Michael's hospital with life-threatening injuries.

It was spring of not-so-long-ago and Ashley had finally started riding her own motorcycle. While I took my time warming up my faithful carburettor motorcycle, she fired up her new fuel-injected little machine and took off on me.

Now, you need to understand, whenever my girlfriend has taken off on me on a bike, bad things have happened. Like the time I told her to take things slowly around the parking lot. She gave me the "yeah yeah" and rolled her eyes. Then she crashed my first bike across the asphalt. I digress...

Ashley was involved in a motorcycle accident on her CBR-125R back in March, 2011. Someone who was stopped (illegally) in a bicycle lane pulled a U-Turn right in front of her. She hit the brakes and the horn and swerved to try to avoid the car, but the car didn’t yield and blocked her exit and they collided.

In stock form, the KYMCO Venox has a great top speed for a cruiser. It does over 140 km/hr, but 5th gear is a bit of an overdrive and the bike doesn't have much pull left at that speed. The bike cruisers comfortably at 120 or up to 130, but at those speeds there isn't a lot of power left for passing.

On my KYMCO Venox, I put in fresh 10W-40 Semi-Synthetic motorcycle oil every oil change. The Synthetic vs. Non-Synthetic debate is older than I am and so I'll avoid it. I like my Semi-Synthetic, it's more than what's recommended, and it's good enough for me.

What is it?

I came across someone who was restoring a 2005 Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle he recently bought. He was doing an awesome job rebuilding it, but didn't know what model of Sportster it was.

It's important to know what Sportster model you have, examples: Low, 883R, SuperLow, Custom, Standard, Roadster, etc. While 95% of parts are interchangeable, getting the wrong Sportster parts for the others can result in different lengths at suspension and at the forks, the wrong tires, and more.

For new riders, the costs of motorcycle insurance can be a surprise. Younger riders in particular may find that their annual motorcycle insurance premium may cost as much as their motorcycle did. Finding out what insurance is before you buy is important because young or old, the first year riding will be your most expensive year riding. Don't jump the gun and start riding before you can afford it, or you'll be tempted to go cheap on insurance, gear, and a safe reliable machine. Making any of those mistakes can cost you in the long run.

What you should know - Motorcycle insurance rates in Ontario are subject to:

Age
Driving history (convictions, accidents and claims)
How long you've held a valid motorcycle class license
What class of motorcycle you intend on insuring (supersports are most expensive, some are even blacklisted and non-insurable in Canada)
The displacement size of the motorcycle (engine size is generally measured in Cubic Centimeters or CC)
The amount of coverage you choose to get.

Where to get motorcycle insurance from.

What to do? Get quotes for different displacement sizes and classes of motorcyles. This way, when shopping around, you'll have a better of idea of how each bike fits into your budget. Sample motorcycles to request quotes for: 2008 Kawasaki Ninja 250, 2005 Kawasaki Vulcan 500, 2004 Honda Shadow 750, 2004 Honda CBR-600. The CBR isn't beginner-friendly, but you're the type who has wet dreams over crotch-rockets it'll give you the reality check on the high rates of insurance of these kinds of bikes.

Whether or not you already had some kind of idea of the type of motorcycle you wanted, when you get your quotes, you'll find out:
a) Whether or not you can afford to ride right now
b) A rough idea of how much different sizes and types of motorcycles would cost you to insure.

Air cooled motorcycles run quieter.
You'll tend to see them more on cruisers as most cruisers typically run at lower RPMs then sportbikes, which tend to be liquid cooled.
Air cool provides more simplicity, representing one less thing which could break or need to be replaced.
Liquid cooling rads are sometimes fragile, and external or aftermarket oil-coolers can also be expensive and likely to break in a drop. Air cooled bikes may be cheaper.

Hey there!

This is the website of Adrian and Ashley, a couple that loves to ride, play, and enjoy outdoor adventures. Since 2007 we've been taking part in Ontario's two-wheel community and enjoy all of the rides, roads, events and meets.

The site began as a window into our lives for family and friends in 2009 under the name "Our Little Adventures". Before long we began to steer further away from our personal lives and deeper into the motorcycles. In 2011 the site was rebranded as YouMotorcycle.com and visitors tripled.

Today the site is a one horse show, so please contact us if you'd like to submit your story. Everything is run from Adrian's basement apartment, "The Mancave", where he houses his motorcycles and a biker-dog named Miley Saurus. Advertisements were recently added to the site to help pay the bills of running the secret underground biker bunker.

We strongly believe that soccer is the beautiful game, hockey is coolest game on earth, and motorcycling is the world's greatest outdoor sport. We love the connection between man (or woman!) and machine, the open road, the freedom and the energy. Do YouMotorcycle?
